Operation Mobilisation Director: Matthew Skirton

The next LEAF Leaders Lunch is going to be at Ashley Baptist Church on Saturday 21st October from 10.00 'till 2.00 pm to share fellowship. Our speaker will be Operation Mobilisation (OM) National Director, Matthew Skirton.

The day will be open to leaders and their wives and others in leadership roles - such as elders/deacons/church wardens and missions leaders.

Matthew is the brother of Adam Skirton (pastor at Poulner Baptist) and is an excellent motivational speaker.

Moldova ~ God's plan

During the 1970s and 80s, OM had smuggled Bibles and Christian literature to the Moldova (the poorer cousin of Romania) which was then part of the Soviet Union, but since Moldova’s declaration of independence in 1991, little had been known about the country other than a rumour of extreme poverty and a reputation of being a “bandit, mafia country” that was dangerous to visit. OM had no ministry in the country and was not thinking about starting one, but God has his own plan.
Matthew and his wife, Helen, clearly remember a watershed moment in their lives in October 1994. At that time Matthew was travelling through Romania, on his first visit to Eastern Europe, to distribute literature.

“As we drove along beside a river I looked on the map and saw that we were driving very close to the former Soviet Republic of Moldova. There was something exciting and fascinating about the mysterious country that I could see just across the river, and when we stopped for lunch I wondered what it would be like to go there.” Matthew describes in his book 'Missionary Me?'.

“Before we set off again, we decided to pray for Moldova – this ‘unknown country’ that was literally a stone’s throw away across the river. I prayed what I considered to be a reasonable prayer of blessing for the country and that God would strengthen believers and his Church there. Then Karin [a lady guide] began to pray. She prayed for Moldova generally and then she finished her prayer with ‘and Lord please would you send Matthew and Helen there as missionaries one day.’

A New Work in OM Moldova

Shortly after this Matthew, and his wife Helen, started OM's work in Moldova, staying there for 20 years and bringing up 5 children in the process. Now OM Moldova has over 100 workers, and includes leadership training, micro-business work, gospel outreach in the summer on the river and in the villages using games, sport, stories etc. They also provide daily feeding programmes for elderly and kids' clubs after school, and much more...!

Matthew became Regional Director as well during that time, covering some other Eastern European Countries. He is really gifted in sharing the Gospel, but also in motivating other people, and in developing younger leaders. In January 2016 Matthew was appointed National Director of OM UK and the family re-located to Shropshire.

GOfest

Matthew was one of the speakers at the recent Moorlands GOfest weekend and pastorJoy Bingham, (LEAF trustee and leader of River of Life Church) found him very inspiring.
